The two tech giants are squaring off over more areas, including e-mail, advertising, search and social media, as they compete for the hearts and minds of Internet users. Google is planning to add a new feature this week that will let Gmail users share a stream of status updates with friends, a form of social media that Facebook and Twitter popularized.
